spray you later
June 19, 2008 | Category: I'm a Momma, I'm an Urban Dweller
Growing up in Michigan, we had two things:
1. Those little things we call The Great Lakes.
2. The backyard hose, with the homemade slip and slide, constructed out of black plastic that hurt so good to play with.
I graduated college, moved to the land of corn and all things hoosier-ish. I said goodbye to the land of sandy dunes and watering holes. Somehow uncharacteristically, I have found my family living in uncharted territory, a metro area. Scary.
Gone are the days of building a fort in the backyard woods, or swimming in the creek. The closest thing that resembles a fort in my backyard now I think sells beverages of the refreshing nature for 40 ounces, on the cheaps.
And I actually do have something that’s called a “creek” only a few blocks away, but the waters pretty stagnate and typically has drunk bums passed out at its waters edge (see my above def. of fort)
So, it’s summertime and us girls just wanna have fun. What to do, what to do with the day…
I discovered spray parks only last year, after living in Indy for over 6 now. Where I came from, I had never heard of something so novel, so unique. I am in love with these things! Do you know what they are?
Concrete pads with water spraying up out of the ground. simple. perfect. Let me count the ways I love them:
1. I can go in them without sporting a bathing suite. – key to my body complex I got going on.
2. Nobody child can drown (I don’t think). – key to well, survival.
3. I can sit on the grass and watch if I want, be a non-participant. – key to my momma laziness.
4. It gets PK so darn tired she actually takes naps – key to a happy life for all.
I love them because I can put my paranoia aside. Go ahead, get wet, run your little hearts out, have a blast in the water……you can’t sink!

We were so fortunate to have a “beach” in our front yard. Remember the pond when we treated it with blue chemical and I thought you girls would turn into “smurfs?” Oh the fountain you had! Hopefully next summer it will return!

Have you taken your little ones to Indiana Beach yet? They would have a blast there..but, for just an afternoon of leisure, free…you can’t beat the spray parks!

I’ve only ever seen them in movies, but they are so cool! We get to go to the lake, but these are much cleaner without the sand and you don’t have to worry about drowning.

When we lived in San Jose, CA they had parks with water everywhere. Spray parks, splash parks, pump-your-own water parks (with sand) and they were all free. My children were 2 and 4 at the time and loved them! You brought back some very fond memories for me. Now my 9 and 7 yo are “bored” all the time.

Those places really ARE the BEST! (As long as your son doesn’t get lost and you panic!)
