DesignHER lost in NYC

March 13, 2009 | Category: I'm a Traveler

DesignHER lost in NYCI’m busy, busy, busy packing up and getting ready to head out. I’m on my way outta this po-dunk small town and heading to the Big Apple for a glorious week of all things unknown and foreign.

I’ve never been to NYC and I have to admit that I’m a bit intimidated. Schedule? What schedule? I’ll be there over 5 days and the majority of the time is unscheduled and I’ll be on my own (oh, so scary).

I have my Foders guide as well as my Zagat food guide, and I might pack some mace – but that’s about it.

I ask of you, I plead with you. If you’ve been to NYC, tell me what I should do. If you’ve never been but have always wanted to go, what would you do if you are me? Things on my tentative agenda include: hanging out with Ross and Monica at Central Perk, having a cup of coffee at Dean & DeLuca with Felicity, and probably see if Carrie Bradshaw wants to take me to a few of her favorite little out of the way shops. Pretty loose plans really.

I’m desperate, help me plan my trip before I become DesignHER Lost in NYC.

    I heart NYC!

    Mostly the food…

Get some pizza in Brooklyn, get some cheesecake at the carnegie deli, buys some “nuts 4 nuts” off the street.

I love Ellis Island, very touristy but neat! Go see a show on Broadway, too many to choose from. Go to some of the musuems-MOMA. I think you can get in free the last hour of the day everyday… Walk the Brooklyn Bridgeheading torwards Manhattan-beautiful view of the city.

    Go shopping!

Get yourself on the Today show =)

I could just walk around there for hours, it’s so fun! Enjoy, I’m jealous.

NYC is huge and fun, and if you want to see what’s what take a double-decker bus tour…they go everywhere and you can get on and off because there’s always another one! You can catch one in Time Square and easily spend an entire day exploring. Skip the Empire State Building, not really worth it in my opinion. I also really loved Ellis Island, seeing a musical on Broadway, the street vendor pretzels and the cheesecake. Have fun!

I have never been, but if I ever get to go, first on my list is the Statue of Liberty. It just represents so much hope to me. After that, I have no clue!

I’ve never been but my mom was there last Summer. She saw several celebrities (she got really close to John Travolta outside his movie trailer) and a couple movies being made, so be on the lookout for those kinds of things. I think it’ll be exciting…take lots of pictures and tell us all about it when you return. I would love to see the Today show too!

I lived and worked there for several years and so of course, I never did anything until I moved away and went back to visit.

You can visit the TKTS booth in Times Square (although there is one downtown too) and buy half price tickets to Broadway shows. You have to have cash and you should have an idea of what you want to see – the workers there can be a little bit reminiscient of the Soup Nazi. :) There is a big sign so you can just be looking at it while you are on line.

I would really really recommend walking across the Brooklyn Bridge – it is a great and beautiful walk and provides fantastic views of the city, and also has interesting history of the bridge. You can just take the subway to the Brooklyn Bridge or City Hall stop and then poof! you will be there.

We just recently went to the Tenement Museum and it’s VERY interesting. The website is tenement.org. It is basically a tour through a tenement building as it was when it was first built.

You can just take the Staten Island Ferry if you want to just look at the Statue of Liberty – it’s a free ride and you can look going to SI and coming back. It leaves from the Whitehall/South Ferry stop off the 1/9 train.

Buy a fun card or whatever it’s called for a Metrocard and take the subway. If you have an iphone, they have a good subway map application, otherwise check straphangers.org, for bus and train info.

Ellis Island is SUPER interesting, if you have the money and the time. Personally, I would skip Liberty Island – it can be kind of dullsville, imo.

There is a fun bar in the theater district called Joe Allen’s and if you have any interest in seeing theater celebs, there are usually a lot there. It’s a fun bar with decent bar food, too.

I love Jimmy’s Tavern for a dive bar in Times Square.

Lastly, the Frick is an interesting and under-visited art museum, at Fifth Avenue and Central Park. It’s a private collection in the original house, I think.

Have fun – I am SO SO SO jealous!

Start spreadin’ the news! Do all those things mentioned, but make sure you spend some time just walking around Times Square. See the big city lights, baby! And make sure you take a cab to the Upper West Side – visit restaurant row…

Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog! Have a great time in NYC! My husband lived there for 7 years and we make the trip back every year. Fun stuff! It looks like you have some great suggestions. I’ll just add that you should go shopping in Soho and there’s a great independent theater (the Angelika) on Houston. Little Italy has fabulous food. The TKTS booth is totally worth the line. Eat a street hotdog, pretzel, falafel or whatever floats your boat. Yum! I, frankly have never done Ellis Island because I hear the lines are murder, but you can get a great view of the Statue from the Staten Island ferry, which is free. Oh, check out Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Ctr) at night. Awesome view! If you like art, the Met and MOMA are must sees. The West Village has some cute funky stores, a couple of cool toy stores too, if you want me to look up the names (I keep notes from our trips), drop me a line. I think that’s it… :)

    Oh so jealous!

    Everything everyone else said plus:

Take a stroll in Central Park. We especially loved the area around Strawberry Fields.

Stopping and shopping in all the funky little shops in Soho.

ABC Carpet and Home was amazing.

Stop and eat anywhere that looks tempting. A cupcake from Magnolia, a hot dog from Gray’s Papaya, a pastry and coffee in Little Italy.

Can’t wait to hear all about it!

The first and only thing I’d do in NYC is stalk Marinka at Motherhood in NYC until she took me shopping or something.

Oh have fun! I was only to NYC once when I was about 5 with my family. My dad drove our family there and we hit the big city during rush hour. Once he finally made it through the traffic jam he never went back. We didn’t even get out of the car once, lol!

Oh how fun! My hubby lived in NYC for over 6 years and he has never taken me there yet. Doggone it!

I think I would want to take a jog through Central Park. And of course see a show or two on Broadway. Eat at a couple of famous restaurants. Do some shopping. And of course, hit the town at night. Have fun!

Hey there, thanks for checking out my blog!

I am actually heading into the city tonight..love it.

But if i were you and going for the first time i would definitely check out MOMA, the Brooklyn Bridge, shopping in the village and eat a cupcake at Magnolia’s (Bleecker St), The South Street Seaport, get the recession special at Gray’s Papaya, and go to Times Square (just don’t eat or buy anything in Times Square – everything is overpriced).

Your going to have a great time. Enjoy!

I second the double decker bus idea….a great way to see New York, and you can get off and on as you please!

Also, have lunch at Tavern on the Green in Central park. It’s not as busy at lunch, and it’s cheaper!

I also recommed the TKTS booth in Time Square, gotta love 1/2 price broadway tickets!

Dean and Deluca is a must. Their soups and sandwiches are awesome so go there for lunch. Seeing a show if you have the funds is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening on Broadway. I always visit Sephora and Saks and it's fun to walk through Tiffany's. I like taking carriage rides through Central Park and try to spot famous people (never have!). Ray's pizza in times square is also a great place to go and then there's M&M and Hershey's stores…that's the chocolate part in me that must be satisfied. You are going to have a great time. I have never once felt unsafe in the city at least not around the areas I stayed (Times Squary, Fifth Ave, Broadway). Enjoy!!

    LOVE NYC!!!

have a bloody mary in the oak bar @ the plaza — just do it. delicious!

make sure you get a dessert with that coffee!

since you are there for 5 days, totally take advantage of the last minute discounted broadway tickets.

walk 5th avenue and take it all in. shop alittle too :) have the ladies do your make-up!

Just explore! every corner holds a new adventure.

    have a blast!

Oh a solo trip! Wow that’s even better than a matinee by yourself! (I’m not being sarcastic – I LOVE going to movies solo.) My siblings live in NYC and the coolest thing they’ve taken us to is the Tenement Museum – an old tenement house. Have fun! And there’s a NEW cupcake place run by a Hoosier that is supposed to rival Magnolia’s and taste way better: Sweet Revenge.

We went there once. Not solo though. Had fun. Would do it again. But, 5 days there was too much city for us. Also, not a very kid-friendly place. I think we went two entire days before seeing another small human. [Ah]

    Big sigh!
