Listening to live Grown-up music (with Grown-ups)
May 7, 2009 | Category: I'm a Music Lover
Tuesday night the stage was set for a nice, adult evening out with just Michael and I and a few good friends. The tickets were at Will Call, the babysitter was scheduled – and momma had a new pair of shoes just perfect for the occasion.
On the agenda was seeing one of my new favorite artist, Diane Birch, who was opening for another one of my favorite artist, James Morrison.
But as they say, life never goes as planned.
Earlier in the day, Birdie was acting a bit strange. My fears were confirmed when she vomited all over me in the public library. In my horror, I was one bad judgment call away from driving home shirtless (me, not Birdie. I had no qualms about stripping her down to her skivvies). Thankfully my coping skills took over and I knew riding home with vomit all over me was a far better idea than flashing mah beewbs to unsuspecting victims on the route home.
So, needless to say, our plans for am amazing adult night with my husband were spoiled. I was sad – but not defeated.
Since I still had the tickets, (and the venue was oh-so-close to home) I grabbed my friend Nicole and we headed out for a few hours while I left Michael to play nurse on his own.
When we got to the club, first thing us ladies did was hit the ladies restroom (naturally). Come on, we needed to re-apply our lipstick. As I was washing my hands – I saw her. Diane Birch was right next to me (talking on her cell phone, she’s a bathroom cell phone talker, who knew?)!
I was so shocked to see her in the “civilian potty room” that I almost thought it wasn’t her. But it definitely was – honestly, nobody in Indy dresses that bohemian funky chic.
I really wanted to ask her for her picture (I am a blogger for goodness sake), but since we were in the ladies room I thought it might be inappropriate. But….now I totally regret that I didn’t seize the moment and just ask.
Anyway, the concert started and it was better than I could have ever expected. I tried to get some good pictures of the stage, but my little point-n-shot was a disappointment as always. Instead of a picture of Diane, I give you a picture of Mrs. Blonde and I. Mr. Blonde said that the best seats for sound are right by the sound guys, so this is where we lingered (and I’m SO too old (lazy) to shove through the crowd to get up to the front).
Diane played about 6ish songs as the opening act, which you can listen to most of them free off her Myspace page and follow her on twitter. I love her sound – deep, soulful and full of emotion. Singing cotton candy tunes is not in her bag.
Her first album, Bible Belt, releases next month – and I can’t wait.
After a quick intermission – we got to hear the all the lovely, yummy, sexiness that James Morrison could muster.
Since I was playing hooky from my sick baby, I only stayed through half of his concert and was back to see the end of the late news on TV.
Next time, I forbid my children to bust up my date night. That’s allowed and will totally work, right?

I am SOOOO jealous!! I finally got confirmation of my tickets as I sat in the hospital awaiting my surgery. There was no way hubs and I could make it! So depressing…I REALLY want to make it to the next one!
So sorry hubs couldn’t come with you, and that Birdie was sick!! Poor thing. I hope she’s doing better now!!

Sorry to hear Birdy was sick. Glad you managed to get out and see the concert too. My brother went to that concert and I so badly wanted to join him, but I missed it. . .
