Strangers Junk turns me On

June 1, 2009 | Category: I'm a Shopper, I'm an Urban Dweller

Strangers Junk turns me OnIt’s no secret that I love, LOVE other peoples castoffs. Although I don’t do it near as often as I wish, I will pull my mom wagon over on the side of the road in a moments notice if your sale looks promising.

This weekend, if you lived anywhere close to Highway 40 (runs directly through Indy) you were privy to the looooongest yard sale in the history of the USA (I know, a junk lovers dream).

Word is – that this sale starts in Maryland and ends in Missouri (although I cannot confirm this, sounds like an urban myth to me). Now, it’s not one end-to-end table for miles kinda sale, you have to drive from yard to yard (sometimes with a mile or so in between). But if you’re out to see some countryside and acquire some weird crap, from some even more bizarre country folk, this event is for you.

Saturday morning came, we loaded up the bus, headed West and took to the open road. We scavenged, we used Strangers Junk turns me On lots of hand sanitizers, we EXPLORED.

Treasures from our bounty included a babydoll (free), slinky (.25cents), large speaker that a certain someone simply had to have, even if he hasn’t a clue what he’s going to do with it($5), a few books ($1.25), a mini guitar amp($10), and a Muppet Babies drum circa 1985 (.25cents).

So is it just me? Who likes other peoples junk? Does anyone else find the hunt thrilling?

If you wanna see how other Mom’s explore with their family, visit the ladies over at Mom’s Marbles. (they’re having a big bash over there this week with lots-o-prizes)

I remember many a happy day "exploring" garage sales with my mom and dad. And I am beyond jealous of your Muppets drum.
    Thanks for Showing & Telling!

I come by my garage sale addiction honestly – my mom is a garage sale fiend. The lure of an unknown bargain is too much for me to resist. My favorite recent score: a Kettler trike for $10! The Muppet drum rocks.

Love that Muppets drum! Our neighborhood had its garage sale this past weekend. I scored some great books and 2 cute kiddie chairs to add to my son’s kiddie table ($5 for both!!).

I’m a garage sale freak which I think comes genetically from my dad. I even have an Oscar the Grouch t-shirt that says “I love trash.” that I wear when I garage sale. Appropiate don’t you think? – Pam (a recent viewer to your blog)

My mother-in-law LOVES yard sales and gets some really good deals all the time. While I love a good deal and don’t mind other people’s stuff, I don’t have the patience to hunt for it so I’m more of a second hand store, Goodwill or Salvation Army kind of person where it’s all contained in one building. Maybe if I stopped and got a really large coffee drink I could try some early morning yard sales this summer.

I love the Goodwill close to my office. Lots of great deals. I also love to find kids’ books at yard sales. I haven’t hit any yard sales yet this year but my oldest daughter wants to…raisin’ her up right. To treasure others’ JUNK. ;)

    p.s. that Muppet drum RAWKS

I live in the middle of Ohio near 40 and the sales are over here too. So maybe the urban myth is real. Super cool drum.

Yeah, the Raders love junk too, and a good deal is something I can rarely pass up. I remember being embarrassed by thrift stores and garage sales as a kid….now Im my mom. Favorite deal of recent: Brand new Keen sandals in AJ’s size for $1. Ok, it was 2 years ago, but Im still reveling:)

I got hooked on these while living in Hawaii. I would be on the road by 6:30 am on Saturdays and home by 9. You know that I furnished our entire house via garage sales and Goodwill and made money on them when we left…with my own garage sale of course.

I remember getting up early with my grandmother and hitting yard sales. Now I just refuse to get up that early!

Actually, this year the yard sale started somewhere way out west and ends in Gadsden, Alabama. It's a loooong stretch across several states. Love me some junk and am so impressed with your muppet drum!
