Chocolate + Bacon = Fair Food FAIL
August 21, 2009 | Category: I'm an Eater
There has been a lot of hype over this salty sweet concoction called chocolate covered bacon. It’s been the food talk of the fair now for weeks. Urban myth it is not, it really does exist. Out of all of my Hoosier friends have attended the fair this year, I don’t think any of them have been adventurous enough to brave this treat.
Being the giving one that I am, I thought I would take one for the team and find out what the big deal is. You’re welcome in advance. And anyway, we needed a good snack to munch on while we listened to a little “Hammertime” via MC Hammer himself.
Going into this experience, I had a few misconceptions.
1. I thought that it was a hot treat. Because really, who eats cold bacon?
2. I thought it came on a stick. Doesn’t everything at the fair come on a stick?
Snack clarification: it’s a cold piece of bacon, not on a stick, covered in chocolate and powdered sugar.
I went up to the stand (didn’t have to wait in line, this should have been my first clue), plopped down my $5 (I know, highway robbery right? $5 for 3 sticks of cold bacon?).
I was the first to take a bite. I put up a pretty tough front when it comes to being brave. Seriously, I’ll try everything once. I was assuming it would taste like chicken.
Second of course was my trusty tasting mate Michael. This is a guy that honestly can down a whole pound of bacon in one sitting. He is a pork kinda guy. I make him cook it outside because I can’t stand the lingering smell it leaves in the house.
Next was the Bird. Birdie always has to try whatever we are eating. I thought she would love it because she eats the weirdest things. Out of any of us, she took to it the best.
PK was reluctant but gave it a go since one of the main ingredients in it was chocolate. How could she say no to her parents wanting her to eat candy?

Our foodie review, in order of willing participants:
ME: Chocolate and bacon should be left separate. Apart, they are both heavenly foods but slapped together it’s better suited for serving in Hell. Bacon as a desert is a big fail. Don’t get me wrong, I like my salted pork products cut thin and served on a sandwich. My favorite, is the Batali from the Goose Market.
Michael: Thought it was disgusting. It was the first time I’ve ever seen him throw bacon in the trash. Enough said. This coming from the guy that will eat moldy taco meat.
Birdie: If anyone enjoyed it, it was her. I did find her chewing on the same piece of bacon over 20 minutes later while touring the horse barn. Although she savored every bit, she now is a bit “backed up” (if you know what I mean) and has perpetual bad breath that I just can’t get rid of.
PK: I knew she didn’t care for it when she starting to gag and twitch. Seriously, involuntary twitching and gagging from a 4 year old. I’m such a bad mom.
Our Conclusion: Chocolate covered bacon was not a hit with the DesignHer family at the Indiana State Fair. It’s a miracle we all survived and lived to tell about it. I would love to hear from someone who enjoyed this treat but am guessing this person doesn’t exist.

Thank you! Everyone on the internet is all "This is the best thing ever ZOMG!" and from the very beginning I thought it sounded horrid. Thanks for braving the front lines and telling it like it is.

Too funny! It doesn't sound like a tasty combination to begin with, then hearing your reactions, I think I'll stay away from this "treat!" Thanks for sacrificing yourself to share this FAIL with us!

Good to know! My friend has been making chocolate covered bacon on her own for months now and swears it's delectable. I think I'll have to just take your word that it's not, haha.

Thanks for taking one for the team. I couldn't bring myself to try it. Then again, it was 9:30 a.m. The only thing that sounded remotely good at that point was the cream puffs from Taylor's and a giant cup of coffee. I will say this, though: don't write chocolate + bacon off for good until you've tried a Mo's Bacon Bar from Vosges Chocolate. Tiny bits of bacon in really good chocolate = yum. Giant piece of cold bacon covered in crappy chocolate, not so much.

Dang! Since I haven't seen anything like this out here, thought it may be something to draw me to your State Fair next year. (Having read so many great things about it on Twitter).
Better stick with my Reese's.
Still waiting for someone to explain deep fried Pepsi

I am so disappointed because I really thought this would be good!
Also, to Rick, deep fried Pepsi is Pepsi syrup inside a ball of deep fried dough. And it's GOOD.

I feel better now that I didn't bother with it. The perpetual bad breath and backed up comments were enough to make me conclude that we did the right thing by passing it by.
And the deep-fried Pepsi–one of your friends asked about it–isn't all that interesting. The Pepsi, I'm told, is mixed in the batter so that you basically get deep-fried Pepsi-tasting dough blobs. Little Pepsi; lotta dough. Is that a reasonably accurate description? In other words, don't imagine biting through the crispy dough to a fluid center…

I had heard about these. Gross! I am kinda relieved they weren't good.

That sounds really gross! But, I wonder if my husband would have liked it. He LOVES bacon AND chocolate; and he doesn't mind mixing his food (sweet and salty) together on his dinner plate. We haven't seen this Fair food option in our area yet but I'll be looking for it to see if he'd try it.

Someone on IndyMoms had a similarly bad experience not-crisp bacon and overdose of powdered sugar. She posted a recipe that she says they came home, tried, and actually liked. No powdered sugar, crisp bacon, not cold, sprinkled with almonds.

Did you not get that phone call prior to paying for that garbage? It was common sense. No worries…He'll call again. He's persistant like that. -Mr. Blonde

Now usually, I would be a fan of ANYTHING covered in chocolate but I can see how this would not be so good. I'll stick to the fried oreos and snickers that we get at our fair…

Living on the East Coast there are some things I think we miss out on – like State Fairs (not big around here), corn fields that last for miles and fried twinkies.
Chocolate covered bacon never entered my mind…

I'm glad that you tried it…so I don't have to. Thanks for taking one for the team!
P.S. I can't believe there is a company that actually specializes in chocolate-covered bacon. Yuck.
