I went to a college that only prided it’s self on getting up early one day a year. St. Patty’s Day. It was imperative that we get up, put on our bar crawl green t-shirts, shiny green beads and search for the best green eggs and green beer being served in East Lansing, MI. If my memory serves me right, the bars opened at 6am – and there was always was a line to get in.
Once we were through the line and into the bar; the eggs were typically gross (not surprised), the green beer was cheap and full of foam (although what could you expect for $2 a pitcher), and we were always back to our apartment by 4pm to order pizza and pass out to Oprah. It was the good life.
[Seriously, I have this picture, looked for it for hours last night, and ended up empty handed. It’s probably better this way.]
Fast forward 11 years, things have changed but they are kinda still the same. I’m still getting up early, but more on a daily basis instead just for a special drinking occasions. I just might make some green eggs, but they will taste good and I’ll eat them. There probably will not be any green beer consumed in my day, although I’ve picked up a sixer of Guinness to enjoy with a few friends over homemade fish & chips later tonight. And at the end of the day, I’ll probably still feel like passing out, but it will be long after Oprah has aired and for different reasons.
It’s going to be a nice day here. I plan on celebrating by taking my crew to the park to play. A place where there will be no line, no bouncer checking our ID at the gate, just a crazy toddler fun for all. Maybe we will go around in a circle and pinch each others butt or something for not wearing green.
And even though today will be a much tamer celebration than 11ish years ago, we still might get some looks. Apparently people think baby heads poking out of fleece vests looks weird. It’s like they’ve never seen a floating bald baby head or something.
Enjoy your day! I’m not even Irish!
