I’m 4 weeks postpartum, and I’m starting to fantasize about getting back in shape. While I love a good plate of nachos (washed down with a cold beer) any day of the week, I do feel better both physically and emotionally if I exercise and eat right.

I’m excited to re-join my YMCA, start the Couch to 5k program again, and even possibly take some yoga classes at this yoga studio just a block from my house.

Oh, and fitting back in to my jeans again would be super nice too.

Before I got pregnant with Paul, I was on a health kick that included mid-morning smoothies. Drinking a smoothie was an easy way for me to get energized without reaching for a Diet Chemical Coke.

Earlier this week, I saw a particular green smoothie getting pinned on Pinterest like 100o times over, and I knew I had to try it. Unfortunately, it was the biggest PinterFAIL ever. Totally nasty. So sad.

I refuse to give up. This morning, I brushed off my gag reflex, and searched Pinterest for a more tolerable green monster smoothie recipe.

Speaking of Green Monsters, have you ever cloth diapered a 1 month old and a 2 year old?

(oy, I digress…)

So today, I’m attempting another green smoothie,based off this pin, with slight adaptions.

My (slightly adapted) from the original recipe Green Monster Smoothie:

  • Handful of fresh baby spinach
  • diced pineapple
  • 1 banana, peeled and cut up
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 kiwi
  • tablespoon-ish of honey
  • 1 raw egg
  • Handful of ice cubes

Ok fine, who am I kidding, I majorly adapted the original recipe, and changed it completely. It’s not remotely the same drink.

Blend it till the blender smokes (what? You’re blender doesn’t smoke after 30 seconds in use?)

Make it look like this:

And then drink it down…

A green smoothie a day...

I mean really, one of these puppies every day will have me back in my pre-pregnancy jeans in no time. Right?

Overall, this smoothing was a PinterSCORE, opposed to a PinterFAIL. I suggest you give it a try.

  2. i am not in a good place right now food-wise, although i suppose there are reasons for that… case in point, i just finished off a glass of overly-sweet chemical-laden regular coke just now, despite the gorgeous fruits, veggies, and yogurt staring at me from the fridge, begging to be smooth-i-fied. i’m in love with the green shake from bolthouse farms, but too chicken to try to make one on my own. i have been trolling pinterest lately, though, and just made some meatloaf muffins (sounds gross but it’s not) from there.

  3. My green-smoothie recipe is this:

    – banana
    – handful of baby spinach leaves
    – handful of frozen berry mix or a few slices of pineapple (strawberry, blueberry etc)
    – 1/2 cup of old fashioned oatmeal
    – 1-2 Tablespoons flaxseed
    – 1-2 Tablespoons wheatgerm
    – 1 cup give or take of juice (pineapple or orange)
    – 1/2 cup or less of no fat vanilla yogurt
    – blend!!

    So good!

Ok, I know that I’m super paranoid because my entire family once got salmonella food poisoning from raw eggs in homemade ice cream, but I’m begging you to omit the raw egg part!! *Shudder* worst sickness ever!! But major kudos on the back into jeans kick. I’m 10 weeks from my due date & dreaming of my pre-preg jeans already. 🙂


  7. I think I must have tried the same smoothie recipe as you. It was pretty bad. I also tried the Nutella popsicles, another Pinter-FAIL. I had the exact same molds as the picture and they wouldn’t come out! Oh well, there are like 101,273 other things to try – not all of them food. Good luck with the working out and give Zumba a shot if they have it at your Y. It is totally fun, and burns major calories.


  8. I have successfully made and enjoyed green smoothies before but my last few were failures! The spinach chunks seemed way to big to slurp and I hated them. Wonder if I need a smoking blender!! Maybe it’s just what I’m blending it with. I will give this one a shot. Thanks!

I tried some amazing ribs I found on Pinterest, but they will not help you in your quest to fit in pre-pregnancy jeans, and since I like you so much, I’m not even going to share the recipe with you. (Except I will, and I can email it to you if you want. Totally easy and uses the crock pot. Can’t beat that!) Is the yoga studio by your house Invoke? I used to go there a lot. I need to start going again AND I’m actually starting C25K again tonight. I have my clothes in the car. Got to get my booty in wedding shape in 6.5 months. Ack!

  12. I discovered jalapeno grilled cheese sandwiches on the Pinterest which, for the record, do NOT help you get back in your pre-pregnancy jeans, but are magically delicious. I also discovered a neato chocolate cake that you nuke in a mug and eat all by yourself.

    not like spinach at all! I use frozen fruit, a fresh banana, and raw honey. Mix it with the greens, and it taste like pure fruit!
