Running to the beats (sponsored)

*Over the next couple months I’ll be blogging about my fitness journey thanks to my ambassadorship with Smooth Fitness. While these posts are sponsored and I received a super sweet treadmill in exchange for my story, I’m taking this opportunity to get in shape extremely seriously. OK, mostly seriously anyway…

When I first got the treadmill, I instantly found it hard to get any mileage down like I could outside or at the gym.

I didn’t get it. I was in the comfort of my own home, firing up my favorite guilty pleasures on the TV, but was dying before I could get even one mile underfoot. Those first few weeks, I had many depressing “1 (mile) and done” workouts. And I was depressed and discouraged.

But then I had a light-bulb moment. While What not to Wear, Say Yes to the Dress and Bridzillas might be awesome shows (shut up they are), they’re simply not motivating. And commercials? Kill me dead, I cannot run through a freakin’ shampoo ad.

I need beats. Loud, raging, yell in my face beats. Songs that get my heart-rate up, that take my mind off the monotony of running.

Depending on the length of the song, I need about 2-3 songs a mile (my comfort zone is around 10:30 minute miles). Basically if I don’t have my running playlist and yurbuds in my ears, I simply don’t run. Yes, I’m that extreme. Judge me all you want, but it’s impossible for me to “meditate” or “think good thoughts” or whatever crazy people who don’t listen to music do while running.

My top 10 running songs (which will get be about 3 miles):

1. Can’t Hold Us (feat. Ray Dalton) – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

2. I Love It (feat. Charli XCX)Icona Pop

3. Let the Groove Get In – Justin Timberlake

4. Paper Planes – M.I.A.

5. Scream & Shout – Will.I.Am

6. Stripper – Sohodolls

7. Ooh La La  – Britney Spears

8. Let Me Clear My ThroatDJ Kool

9. All Summer Long – Kid Rock

10. Supermassive Black Hole – Muse

And there you have it. Ok, since I’m training for a half marathon (yikes), and this playlist will only take me a quarter of the way to the finish line, I really would love to add a bunch of new tunes to the playlist.

Your turn. Give me your best get-up-and-go tune.

  1. It’s a little random for a dancy-type list, but I love “Wolf Like Me” by TV on the Radio to get me pumped during a workout.

  2. i needed this post…i’m in need of some new running beats too. I’m like you too…need the music up as loud as possible to keep me moving! here’s what i got for you:

    *Blurred Lines–Robin Thicke
    *Wake Me Up–Avicii
*My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)–Fall Out Boy…..this one usually helps me get thru the miles when I’m really struggling.
    *Black and Yellow–Wiz Khalifa
    *4Minutes (featuring Justin Timbelake)–Modanna
    *Boys’Round Here–Blake Shelton
    *Cruise–Florida Georgia Line
    *Radioactive–Imagine Dragons
    *Girl On Fire–Alicia Keys
*I knew You Were Trouble–Taylor Swift

So as you can see…i need music too 🙂

  3. it’s been ages since i went running, but i remember more than one occasion on which i got myself all dressed up and pumped up to run only to find my ipod dead on my way out the door. cue heel-turn back inside, motivation gone.

our running music tastes are similar–i have macklemore and icona pop on my running playlist, too. i also find motivation from angry/metal music and old school rap…like rage against the machine, megadeth, ll cool j (mama said knock you out is great), and public enemy 🙂

  4. Anything by Fall Out Boy
    Freakum Dress By Beyoncé
Paris (Ooh la la) By Grace Potter and The Nocturnals
    S&M by Rhianna

Gotta have a good beat or like you, I can’t run!!

  5. Paper Planes was one of the songs that got me through my mini training a few years ago – love it. I also love:
Robyn “I Keep Dancing On My Own”
The Killers “When You Were Young”
    Sia/David Guetta “Titanium”
    Pink “Raise Your Glass”
and because I’ll be a Directioner forever …
    One Direction “Best Song Ever”

  6. I can’t run anymore. I’m not sure if it’s a mental block or if my foot/leg being still numb after a back injury just make it too hard. I feel like I’m always off balance. Shrug. My list is still on my phone though. I had a few that you have. Here’s a few others. Give me Everything by Pitbull. Starships by Nicki Minaj. We can’t Stop – Miley. (Yes, I know.) Countdown – Beyoncé. Dynamite – Taio Cruz. Magic – B.O.B. Say Hey I love you – Michael Franti. So what – Pink.

Good luck on the half marathon!

  7. Girl on Fire – Alicia Keys
    Lose Yourself – Eminem
Catch My Breath – Kelly Clarkson
Crazy in Love & Single Ladies – Beyonce
Glitter in the Air, Raise your Glass, etc… there is a lot of Pink on my playlist
Imma Be – Black Eyed Peas

Do you know about You can find their playlists here:

  9. Jen McDougal says:

Thank you for the great ideas. I am training for a 1/2 as well. I am downloading a bunch of these now.

    Some of my favorites:
    Stronger – Kelly Clarksoon
    How Far We’ve Come – Matchbox 20
Bust A Move – Young MC
    Payphone – Maroon 5
Groove is in the Heart – Deee-Lite
    True Love – Pink
Running on Empty – Jackson Browne
Hungry Like the Wolf – Duran Duran
    Move – MercyMe

  10. Can you do an incumbent bike? Great list!!

  11. My comment on the incumbent bike was meant for Issa. It looks like it went to the bottom instead of directly to her comment.

Cardio is so boring…So music and sometimes a really intense action movie on the iPad get me moving and keep me going.
Anyway, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis – OH YES!! (If you get a chance to see them live DO IT!!!)
I just downloaded some Katy Perry and Lady Gaga albums so I can work on a better playlist. I too have some Pink and Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons, Muse. Need to add some Black Eyed Peas, Avicii, David Guetta. I know I have a One DIrection album somewhere for my daughter, I’ll have to check that out.

  12. What’s up, I would like to subscribe for this web
site to take hottest updates, thus where can i do it please assist.
